I believe one of the toughest things to do, as a writer, is to push through those moments when inspiration is at low tide.
I'd like some feedback on the tricks others use, and I'll share my own, to get through those periods of low brain activity.
Do you stare at the wall? Write anything, just to see if the act of putting pen to page (does anyone besides me actually write ideas out longhand first?) jogs something? Do you read a book to get the creative juices flowing again? Go for a run outside? I'll list a few of the methods I use, and hopefully some of you will share yours.
1. Change the music!
I almost always play music while I work, and sometimes all it takes is the right piece of music to give me an idea, or at the very least, something to write about when nothing else seems to come.
2. A Night on the Town.
Sometimes a trip to the art museum, public museum, or just a stroll by the lake (Michigan, in my case, here in Milwaukee), is enough to give me ideas.
3. Boxcar Willy!
I've found that putting down what I'm doing and just working on something else can be a great way to dislodge whatever boulders are in my path, story wise.
The hardest thing to do, for me personally, is write on the days where it feels like I have nothing interesting to say, and my brain is apparently gone mush.
